Samuel Grant Oliphant papers, 1881-1907.

The collection is formed by 43 holographic notebooks containing the student notes recorded by Samuel Grant Oliphant during his graduate studies at The Johns Hopkins University, 1902-1907. Among the subjects included are Greek Rhetoric and Syntax, Latin Epigraphy, Romany Elegy, Bible Literature, and notes from the Greek and Vedic Seminaries. A final item is an autograph book kept by Oliphant in 1881 while a student at the Phillips Exeter Academy.

Samuel Grant Oliphant (1864-1936) was a classics scholar who served on the faculties of Washington and Jefferson College, Parsons College, and Grove City College. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Princeton University (1891 and 1894) and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University (1904).
